S.A.D. (Seasonal Affect Disorder) is a pervasive issue (meanwhile, not technically a diagnosable psychiatric condition) around the holidays and winter season, especially in the northern regions of the U.S., where the the icy, cloudy, dismal weather brings in those exact kinds of moods.

The above article is pretty thorough in defining it, the causes, symptoms, treatment, prevention and coping strategies. One thing that struck me was in the ’causes’ section about circadian rhythm. There is a link to sunlight and a body’s internal system that tells it when to be awake and asleep, and throwing it off can cause depression.

I just wonder why we continue to practice daylight savings (daylight doesn’t get tired…let’s use every minute of it while we can!!!) when these are apparent realities that affect people normally, and adversely.
