Influential Babies?

angelina_jolie1a Influential Babies?

Do the names Suri, Maddox, or Apple ring a bell? C’mon all pop culture gurus and celebrity magnets… These are the names of Tom and Katie Cruise, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Gweneth Paltrow…and her husband, lead singer of Coldplay’s (name???) children. I thought it appropriate this Advent season to highlight the babies who are getting a lot of press, based on Forbes.com’s Top Ten List of “Hollywood’s Most Influential Infants.”

The most obvious temptation of voyeuristically consuming these tinsel town people’s lives, is to covet what we think we do not have. The joy of parenthood, and the blessing of children is certainly a wonder, but add to that a multi-million dollar bank account and society’s image-hungry attention, and one might think they have everything, right? However, in a culture that exemplifies that of celebrity couples who repeatedly divorce, go to rehab, and get involved in just outrageous, out of control behavior, this begs the question, is this truly what we want??? It certainly is not what we need.

Whether Forbes.com realizes what they have done, exploiting these insta-famous infants during Advent is ironic. When the Christian world is remembering that it has already received its most “influential” infant, Hollywood (or Satan, take your pick) is constantly trying to distract us from the most important, incarnational influence.

In the context of exploitation, it is remarkable that Jesus is the most written about, talked about, drawn, painted and contemplated figure ever in history by believers and non-believers alike. Born into a time where there were no cameras, journalists or paparazzi -unless you count shepherds and wise men- the story of Jesus’ birth is global and by our advent faith, never ending. Hollywood can never distract our Lord’s world from the Truth of his most influential birth.

Fortunately it amuses as before…………….I’m trying to keep away from reading posts like this. It is totally meaningless. Ain’t it shame to post rubbish like this?

I’m not sure I understand…is it a shame to read about Hollywood, or a shame to read this blog post? If you are talking about Forbes.come, I agree. But what is it about celebrity that just magnitizes us? I think we both know the answer, and try as we might, sometimes we can’t help but be spectators. I hope the point was made that Christ is our influence.
