Missouri Synod Lutherans have been involved in bringing the gospel to the Deaf since 1874. A special school for the Deaf opened in Detroit that year. It was meant to be an orphanage, but instead Deaf children came seeking religious instruction. “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
Now it’s 133 years later. Lutherans are still working to show Deaf people Jesus. Just this past week, I started teaching an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) class to the seminary community. It is the second of a series of classes we have started. There is an interest in our community. Not only that…we have students with a desire to be pastors to Deaf people. We have women that want to serve as deaconesses to the Deaf community.
How many of you know someone that is deaf? Do you know someone that would like to be a pastor to the Deaf? How about a deaconess? There is a continued need in these United States for ministry to the Deaf. There is also a need in other countries around the world. Look for more Deaf posts in the future…and pray the Lord send more workers for the harvest!
