During college, I attended a church abounding in people who thought this Christmas hymn was too hard to sing. It was too long, too difficult to follow the music, and too antiquated. They kept this mantra up for quite some time, convinced their complaints were really quite well-founded until, unfortunately for them, the pastor’s six-year-old daughter sang the whole thing as a solo during the offering one Sunday. Whoops. So if for some reason you don’t get to sing “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” at church this week or didn’t hear it in Kramer Chapel or can’t convince your family to gather around the piano and try it out, we’ve provided a daily fix for your Christmas hymn addiction. You can listen to the Kantorei sing like it like it’s supposed to be sung, or you could go hear them in person when they go on tour next week.

I caught one of my daughters trying to sing the Venite out of the Matins service. I’ll make more of an effort to expose her to that so she can sing the whole thing. Ditto the Magnificat from LSB Vespers.
Dan’s last blog post..A Christ-mass After All
Of the Father’s Love Begotten isn’t too hard to sing…Lutherans just prefer to croon Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Silent Night like Bing Crosby.
