Scott
What a great set of comments you made. As a recent graduate of CTSFW coming from another career, I wholeheartedly agree with all you have listed. It can be done if you take care and give forethought to your financial decisions while at the Seminary. My wife and three children did it and it was a great time for us.

I would add one more thing to the list...As a student you will find that many people will be very generous in helping you. It is amazing that these gifts always seem to come at just the right times.

When we received those gifts, we promised ourselves to never cash a check or put the gift in the bank, UNTIL we had first written a thank you not. It is not just common courtesy but another reminder of placing priority.

All of the suggestions you make are valid points to be considered by couples and families, whether they are seminary students or not.

In the April 2004 issue of CTS's LIfe of the World magazine, in an article entitled, "CTS: A Great Place for a Family" (Rev) Stephen Keiser shares some of the challenges a family of seven faced as they came to the seminary.

On financial advise, the article states:
Steve also shares a financial planning suggstion for second career men :"Come with NO debt, if possible -- pay off credit cards and car loans."

I realize that this is not the American way but couples and families who have taken the extra time to accomplish this or at least reduce their debt prior to arriving at the seminary are grateful they did. It released them from a very stressful burden. The reality is that even if you do not add anything to your debt load while here, but you are making minimum or reduced payments, your debt will increase over the four years you are here due to the interest fees.
