You Might Be Ready to Be a Deaconess Student If . . .

As the scholar, Jeff Foxworthy (!), is discerning of various types of people, so too, in like manner, we created a list of half-satirical pros and cons of diaconal vices and virtues for prospective undergraduate women to ponder…

You MIGHT NOT be ready to be a deaconess student if…

  • you think the navy garb is absolutely, categorically, ipso facto, not for you.
  • you aren’t too fond of people…like, kids, teens, adults and/or elderly…yeah, people.
  • the thought of spending another year in school is met with indigestion and nausea
  • you get a rise out of ‘knowing more’ than the average laymen.
  • you are looking for the man of your dreams here. Um, point of emphasis: there are single men here, and we imagine that you have dreams of finding the right one…sometimes the two intersect…sometimes they do not.
  • R-E-S-P-E-C-T is known as a great oldies tune…and not much else.
  • H-U-M-I-L-I-T-Y is thought to be a typo for balmy weather.
  • this is a last resort.

You MIGHT be ready to be a deaconess student if…

  • you want to learn what it means to be a deaconess.deaconess_solo You Might Be Ready to Be a Deaconess Student If . . .
  • you want to study more in-depth theology, as it applies to serving others.
  • are ready, or at least willing, to learn how to meet people where they spiritually are at
  • you know you will make mistakes.
  • you want to share the journey of deaconess formation with other women who are like AND unlike you.
  • you recognize the importance of repentance and forgiveness on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis…and who the source of that mercy is, Christ.
  • you desire to serve to God’s glory with the gifts and talents he has given you, anddiscover ones that you perhaps didn’t know you had!
  • you KNOW you look good in navy!

All in good fun, but with some serious comments for reflection (hopefully it was easy to

discern which were jokes); we welcome all interested women who have been LCMS for ordinarily 2 years or longer and receiving their bachelor’s degree by May of 2008, to

contact us for more information and an application. 1-800-452-2155. Or email us @ admissions@ctsfw.edu

An upcoming informational retreat for undergraduates, Phoebe Academy, is February 14-17, 2008. Check out www.ctsfw.edu/admissions/pacr/ for more details and online registration.

Melissa, I loved this post. The first part (MIGHT NOT) did make me chuckle a bit, honestly, but the second part (MIGHT) certainly holds true to me, which is why I am still disappointed I cannot make the Phoebe Retreat! However, putting aside my disappointments, reading the second part of the post gave me more reassurance that becoming a deaconess is what I want to do after I’m done with undergrad. (And I most certainly will be coming to the retreat in the following years to get a bit more information and insight on just what the deaconess program at CTSFW offers.)

Melissa, as I was reading through that second list, all the things that you mentioned truly are encountered in the CTS program! I was going through it like, ‘check’, ‘check’…’check’…

What a great place to be.
