Historic Zion Lutheran Church was established in 1883 as a daughter congregation of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Zion was founded under the leadership of Dr. Wilhelm Sihler and Rev. Henry Sauer, who were both originally pastors at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Seeing the need for another church as the number of Lutherans grew in the Fort Wayne, they were instrumental in Zion’s construction. The church was built in the cruciform shape signifying the centrality of Christ crucified in Lutheran worship.
Zion is presently served by the Reverend Douglas Punke. He is a 1998 graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The church also supports Zion Lutheran Academy, a Lutheran school attached to the church, which has served the surrounding community since the founding of the church in 1883.
The Lord’s Supper is offered every Sunday and Wednesday. Daily offices, including Matins and Morning Prayer, are prayed Monday through Thursday during the school year at the academy. The doctrine of the church is lived at Zion in the historic liturgy and the preaching of Law and Gospel in the context of Jesus coming to His bride, the Church, in the Lord’s Supper for the forgiveness of sins.
For more information, go to www.zionfw.org. The church is located at 2313 Hanna Street in Fort Wayne.
