St. Lucy was a Christian martyr who died for Christ in the early fourth century. Since one of the main stories about her is that her tormentors gouged out her eyeballs, she is commonly portrayed in religious art holding a plate with two eyeballs on it. There are some who speculate that her name was not really Lucy, but that since the name means "light," that is a reflection (no pun) of what was done to her. By taking her eyes, her tormentors were snuffing the light for her. But not really. She saw a light the enemy can never comprehend. And her vision was clear as day, eyeballs or no. Jesus Christ is the light of the world who scatters the darkness of sin and death. Northern European counties such as Sweden have such long winters. Far up north, the daylight hardly shines at all. So it's no surprise that St. Lucy (Holy Light) has special importance to the Christians there.
