Pastor Alms at Incarnatus Est has an insightful post on the temptation for church historians to romanticize the past. He successfully disarms such notions through an enlightening quotation from Robert Taft’s book Through Their Own eyes : Liturgy as the Byzantines Saw It. In this particular quotation, Taft describes not the liturgical theology of the Byzantines, but what the people actually did. Taft writes:
