ePILGRIMAGE

Be Inspired. Stay Informed.     February 2008

Welcome to ePilgrimage!

You need inspiration.
You need information.
You've come to the right place!
ePilgrimage is your monthly link to Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana. This is where you, the future pastors of the church (or you fellow Christians who are encouraging them), can come to be informed about the seminary, the application process, financial aid news, and anything else you might need to make the decision to study at the seminary. We'll include stories that will hopefully inspire you to leap over the obstacles that are holding you back so you can be an answer to a congregation's prayer for a pastor.

Welcome to ePilgrimage!

Christ Academy College &
Phoebe Academy College

48 college students from across the country gathered on campus this past weekend for theological reflection, to contemplate serving the Church, and to see that they are not alone as they consider their calling.
Late Sunday night, as most everyone was returning home, Facebook status updates told the tale of a weekend to remember. Many wished to still be in Fort Wayne, others proclaimed their commitment to study here.
As we worshiped together, studied together, and laughed together we quickly saw how the Body of Christ is united though we are separated by miles.
Professors, students, and staff alike all enjoyed the spirit of the attendees and it was indeed a weekend to remember.

A Noble Task
(An essay from the forthcoming "Meditations for Future Pastors" first available from the Admission Department at the Spring Invitational Campus Visit)

One thing about pastoral work: it’s never dull. In the course of one day you tag along with your parishioners on one of the wildest rides imaginable: the rollercoaster of life. Twists and turns, right side ups and upside downs, the peaks and pinnacles of joy and those precipitous downward plunges into darkness and despair—you’ll find them all, most every day, somewhere among the sheep and lambs you are called to tend and nurture.
And you’re the man; people are looking to their pastor to do and say something that will help them hang on during all that, to help them maintain stability in a chaotic and confusing world, to keep a grip on God when everything around them seems to be in flux.
Now who in his right mind would sign on for such a job?

March 27 – 29, 2008

Have you considered becoming a pastor in Christ’s church? Do you desire to love and feed His flock? Are you eager to seek and reach the lost with the miracles of grace? Come to our Invitational Campus Visit held from March 27 – 29 to meet with seminary faculty and students. Hear about our programs of study and learn about the aid that is available to help you become a pastor in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

Seminary education is an adventure in itself. You will never be the same. So perhaps now is the time, and this March will be your opportunity to learn how to enter an exhilarating life of prayer, study, and service at the seminary.

The pastoral ministry is fulfilling, sometimes heartbreaking, work. Our Lord promises a cross but the empty tomb is never far. You know the hour is late and the need is urgent so phone us at (260) 452-2155 or register here.

Miriam's Vocation

By Dcs. Intern Melissa DeGroot

The instrumental part that Miriam played in helping Moses and the Israelites to the Promised Land, Cana, is a beautiful metaphor of what we experience today in the edification of the Church.  God chose Moses to be the pastor to His chosen people and to lead them through the wilderness. Likewise, both Aaron and Miriam were chosen to serve Moses and the Israelites.   "I brought you up out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. I sent Moses to lead you, also Aaron and Miriam" (Micah 6:4).  As many of you know, Miriam and Aaron weren’t perfect, but God knew that their assistance was what Moses needed.  Much can be learned from this today as we, the chosen people of God, endeavor the building up of the Church with the help of women in our present deaconess training and vocation.
Deaconesses have a tradition that extends throughout history, and they have a biblical precedent (Romans 16:2). Further, our synod has had deaconesses since its inception one hundred fifty years ago; formal training began in the 1940s.  In 2003, Concordia Theological Seminary earnestly took up the charge of forming women with the desire and dedication to learn how best to care for God’s people.

Christ Academy, High School

+10th Anniversary+

Christ Academy is a two-week residential program for high-school aged young men of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. It is a place where students can study about Christ who is present in His Word and Sacraments and who died that our sins would be forgiven. It is a place where students can experience seminary life. It is a place where students can explore the possibility of some day becoming a pastor.
Registration is now open. Here is your application.
Who will you encourage to attend?

But How Can I Pay for It All?!

No doubt finances are weighing heavily on your mind as you consider coming to the seminary. Tuition, housing, books, fees, food—"How can I pay for it all?" Fear not! The Lord will provide.
Take a minute and look over all the financial aid opportunities here at the seminary: Financial Aid. The Food and Clothing Co-op alone will ensure that you and your family will be fed and clothed affordably while you are here.
There are grants and scholarships for which you can apply. Through the Adopt-a-Student program, there will be a congregation who will pray for you and provide some help in paying all your bills. We are committed to helping you make ends meet while you are here at seminary.
Certainly you should count the cost but also pray for the courage to live as you must to answer the call to serve God's people.

Each month we're going to include a highlight from the blogosphere. There is a great big world out there with lots of people saying lots of things. We want you to see some of the best of what we've found.

This month, Pastor William Weedon from Hamel, Illinois ,provides some nuggets of wisdom from the early church fathers begging the question, "Were there Lutherans before Luther?" Here is the link. Enjoy!
